How much should an MOT cost?

The maximum fee a test centre can charge for an MOT is set by the DVSA. For a standard Class 4 car it is capped at £54.85. Many garages charge below the cap to win your business, so it is worth comparing local prices.

Why prices vary

The test itself is standardised, but garages set their own price up to the cap. Some offer a lower MOT price hoping you will also book a service or any repairs with them. A cheaper MOT is not a lower-quality test.

Retests

If your car fails, you may be entitled to a free or reduced-fee retest if you leave it at the same garage and it is retested within 10 working days. Always check the retest terms before you book.

Avoid paying for work you do not need
