Why did my car fail its MOT?

In 2024 to 2025, <strong>28.08% of cars failed their MOT first time</strong>. Lighting and electrical faults caused a quarter of all defects, followed by suspension, brakes and tyres. Those four categories account for nearly three quarters of everything found. The order changes for serious faults though: tyres are the biggest single cause of a <strong>dangerous</strong> defect, which means you cannot drive the car away at all.

A failed MOT feels arbitrary when you are standing at the counter reading the sheet. It is not. The DVSA publishes the result of every test in Great Britain, and the same handful of faults come top every single year. Knowing what those are, and crucially which of them are graded serious enough to stop you driving the car home, tells you what your own result probably means.

How many cars actually fail their MOT?

In the 2024 to 2025 financial year, 28.08% of class 3 and 4 vehicles failed at the first attempt. Class 4 is the ordinary car category, so that figure is effectively the national car failure rate.

It is a strikingly stable number. The previous year it was 28.58%, and the most recent quarter published, April to June 2025, came in at 27.24%. So roughly one car in four fails first time, every year, whatever else changes.

The word "initial" is doing real work there. It counts the first test only. A large share of those cars are repaired and pass on a retest days later, so a failure is a normal event rather than a verdict on your car.

One more headline figure is worth holding on to: a dangerous defect was recorded on 7.70% of all tests, about one in thirteen. That is the number that decides whether you drive home or arrange recovery.

The most common MOT failures, by the numbers

The DVSA groups every defect into categories. Two columns matter: how often a category appears as a share of all tests, and how much of the total defect count it represents.

Seat belts, road wheels and vehicle identification make up the remaining 3% or so between them. The top three categories alone account for just over 60% of every defect recorded, and the top four for nearly three quarters.

The order changes completely when the fault is dangerous

This is the part almost every "top MOT failures" list leaves out, and it is the part that affects what happens to you on the day.

A defect is graded minor, major or dangerous. Major and dangerous both fail the test, but a dangerous grade also means the car must not be driven at all until it is repaired. Rank the same categories by how often they produce a dangerous defect and the table turns over:

Lamps generate a quarter of all defects but are graded dangerous on only 13 tests in every 10,000. Tyres generate half as many defects, yet cause more dangerous ones than every other category combined. Brakes sit second on the same measure.

So the practical reading is simple. The most likely reason your car failed is a light. The most likely reason you are being told not to drive it away is a tyre.

Lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment

The biggest category, and the one that stings most, because a great deal of it is a bulb. Testers check headlights, sidelights, brake lights, indicators, hazard lights, fog lights, reversing lights, number plate lights and the reflectors, along with headlamp aim and the security of the units themselves.

Headlamp aim deserves a mention on its own. It fails quietly, because nothing looks wrong from the driver’s seat, and it is not something you can correct at home. It also does not qualify for the free next working day retest that covers simpler items such as lamps and wipers.

Suspension, the fault you rarely feel coming

Second on the list at 19.39% of defects, and the category drivers are most often surprised by. Suspension wears gradually, so the car feels normal to the person driving it every day. Worn bushes, tired shock absorbers, corroded or broken springs and worn ball joints are the usual entries.

Notably, suspension is rarely dangerous by DVSA grading, at 0.50% of tests. It is a common major failure rather than a common emergency, so it usually means a repair bill rather than a recovery truck. The tell-tales, if there are any, are a knock over bumps, the car sitting unevenly, or uneven tyre wear.

Brakes and tyres, the two that can strand you

Together these cause 29% of all defects and the large majority of dangerous ones.

On tyres, the legal minimum tread is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread, right round the tyre. Tread is only part of it though: cuts, bulges, exposed cords, perished rubber and a tyre of the wrong size or type for the car all fail, and those are the ones that tend to be graded dangerous. Brakes are harder to self-assess and worth taking seriously if anything has changed. Grinding, squealing, a soft or long pedal, the car pulling to one side under braking, or a handbrake that travels further than it used to are all worth investigating before the test rather than after it. Visibility, emissions and the smaller categories

Visibility accounts for 7.95% of defects and is almost never dangerous, at 0.01% of tests. It covers wipers that smear or judder, washers that do not reach, mirrors, and damage to the windscreen. The size limits are what catch people out: a chip larger than 10mm directly in the driver’s line of sight fails, and 40mm applies across the rest of the swept area.

Noise, emissions and leaks makes up 5.80%. Diesel particulate filters and a car that has done nothing but short cold journeys are common culprits, as is an exhaust blowing or an engine dropping oil. Body, chassis and structure, at 6.34%, is largely corrosion in the wrong place, meaning structural rust near mounting points rather than surface rust on a wing.

What the numbers mean for your next test

Three things follow from the data, and they are not the usual advice.

First, the biggest category is also the cheapest. Lighting causes a quarter of all defects and the parts are typically a few pounds, so a disproportionate share of failures are avoidable rather than expensive. Second, common and serious are different questions, and only tyres and brakes score highly on both. Third, a failure is ordinary. More than one in four cars fails, so the sheet in your hand is a repair list, not a judgement.

What to do if your car has just failed

Work through it in this order.

  • Check the grade of each item. Dangerous means do not drive it, full stop. Major means it failed and needs repair. Minor and advisory items did not cause the failure, and what an MOT advisory means explains how to treat those.

  • Decide where the repair happens. You are not obliged to have the work done at the testing garage, and you are entitled to a second quote.

How long do I have to fix an MOT failure?

There is no repair deadline as such, but the retest rules reward acting quickly. Leave the car at the same test centre and it must be retested free within 10 working days. Take it away and bring it back later and a partial or even a full fee can apply.

Is a failure the same as an advisory?

No. An advisory is a note that something is wearing but still passes, so it does not stop the certificate being issued. Only a major or dangerous defect fails the test. Minor defects are recorded on the certificate and the car still passes.
