None of these is proof on its own. A dropping coolant level can equally be a perished hose, a corroded radiator or, at the serious end, a failed head gasket. An engine that overheats badly can warp the cylinder head or blow the head gasket, and on aluminium engines that can happen in minutes rather than miles. Is a water pump checked at the MOT?

No. There is no cooling system test in the MOT, and a weeping water pump will not, by itself, fail your car.

There is one threshold worth knowing. Under section 8.4.1 of the DVSA MOT inspection manual, a leak of fluids "such as engine coolant, screen wash and fluid required for Selective Catalyst Reduction are not reasons for failure". What else the garage may want to change at the same time

Some of these are genuine good practice rather than upselling, because the labour is already paid for:

  • The cambelt, tensioner and idler pulleys, if the pump is behind the belt. Refitting an old belt over a new pump is a false economy, and most garages will not do it.
  • The auxiliary belt, if that is what drives the pump. It is a cheap part that has to come off anyway.
  • The thermostat, which is often in the same housing and costs very little next to the labour of going back in.
  • Fresh coolant, and a flush if the old coolant is dirty. The system has to be drained and refilled regardless, so the only extra is the coolant itself.

How to keep the cost sensible

Find out first whether the pump is cambelt driven. It decides whether you are discussing a £300 job or an £800 one, and it makes every quote you receive comparable.

If it is cambelt driven and the belt is anywhere near due, do both now. Paying the labour twice is the single most expensive mistake available here, and the pump is genuinely cheap while the covers are off.
