Dashboard warning lights explained

Warning lights are colour-coded. As a general guide, red means stop, amber means caution, and green or blue is information only.

Red: act now

Red lights usually mean a serious problem. Examples include low oil pressure, engine temperature, brake system and the battery or charging warning. If a red light appears, it is safest to stop as soon as you can do so safely and check it.

Amber: get it checked

Amber lights mean caution. The engine (check engine) light, ABS light and tyre pressure warning are common examples. The car may still drive, but you should have it checked soon.

Green or blue: information

Green and blue symbols simply tell you a system is on, such as headlights or indicators. No action is needed.
