Why is my ABS light on?
An ABS light means the anti-lock braking system has found a fault and switched itself off. What the ABS light actually means
ABS stands for anti-lock braking system. Under hard braking, a locked wheel is a wheel that has stopped steering, so ABS releases and reapplies the brake at that wheel many times a second to keep it rolling and keep the car pointing where you aim it. That is the pulsing you feel through the pedal in an emergency stop, and it is normal.
A small computer runs this using a speed sensor at each wheel. Those sensors are watching for one wheel decelerating much faster than the others, which is what locking up looks like in data. The control unit only has to disagree with one of those four readings to decide it can no longer trust itself.
When it stops trusting itself, it shuts the anti-lock function down and lights the lamp. This is the part worth understanding: the system is failing safe on purpose. It has not broken your brakes, it has removed an assistance layer and told you so, and it now leaves you with the same braking a car had before anti-lock was fitted. Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?
For normal driving, generally yes, provided the ABS light is the only one on and the brakes feel completely normal. You can drive to work and you can drive to a garage. Leave more room than usual, especially in the wet, and brake earlier and more progressively than you normally would.
What you have lost is the safety net in an emergency stop. Without ABS, standing on the pedal in the wet can lock a wheel, and a locked front wheel will not steer, so you cannot brake and swerve around the thing you are braking for. On a dry road at sensible speeds most drivers will never notice. On a wet motorway, or on the first greasy morning of autumn, it is a genuine difference.

The ABS light is an automatic MOT failure
This is the part that turns a vague warning into a deadline, and it is the reason to book it in rather than wait.
Section 1.6 of the DVSA MOT inspection manual covers anti-lock braking systems, and it is short and unambiguous. A warning device that shows a system malfunction is a Major defect, and a Major defect is a fail. There is no advisory version of it and no discretion for the tester, so a car that drives perfectly and has four good tyres still comes back with a refusal certificate.
Two details catch people out. The first is that the manual lists warning device not working as a Major as well, in exactly the same table. In other words, removing the bulb, taping over the lamp or unplugging the cluster fails the test just as surely as the fault did, because the tester needs to see the lamp illuminate and then go out. There is no way to hide this one.
The second is a rule about deleting the system entirely. The manual states that it is not permissible to remove or disable the ABS from a vehicle first used on or after 1 January 2010. For older vehicles, if the system has been intentionally rendered inoperative, the whole system has to come out rather than be left in place dead. The battery one deserves a flag because it produces the most wasted money. A tired battery can throw ABS, traction control and airbag lights together, and every one of them clears when the battery is replaced. Can you reset it yourself?
You can clear the code with a cheap scan tool, and if the fault is real the light will come straight back, usually within a minute of driving or as soon as the car passes a few miles an hour. Clearing codes does not repair anything, and on an intermittent fault it deletes the freeze frame data that would have made the diagnosis quick.
There are two things worth doing yourself before booking, both free. Check the brake fluid level against the minimum mark, because low fluid is a real cause and a two minute check.
