Car battery warning signs and what they mean
A battery on its way out almost always warns you first. The usual order is slow, laboured cranking on a cold morning, then dashboard and headlights that dim noticeably while the engine turns over, then a battery or charging warning light, then a rapid clicking when you turn the key, and finally nothing at all. What the battery actually does
It helps to know what you are diagnosing. Your car battery has one demanding job and one easy one. The easy job is running the clock, the alarm and the various modules that stay half awake while the car is parked.
Everything else, once the engine is running, is the alternator. It powers the lights, the heater, the stereo and the heated screen, and it puts back into the battery what the start took out. This is the key to almost every battery mystery. A battery that seems fine while you are driving can still be incapable of starting the car, because those are two completely different demands.
A battery ages by losing its ability to deliver that big starting current. It can still show a perfectly respectable voltage sitting on the driveway and still fail the moment the starter asks it for real power. That is exactly why a proper test loads the battery rather than just measuring it.
The warning signs, in the order they usually appear
Battery symptoms tend to arrive in a fairly predictable sequence over a few weeks. Knowing the order tells you roughly how much time you have.
1. Slow, laboured cranking. The earliest and most reliable sign. The engine turns over more slowly than usual when you turn the key, with a heavier, more effortful sound, and it takes a fraction longer to catch. It is most obvious first thing in the morning and after the car has stood for a day or two. This is easy to talk yourself out of, because the car does still start, but it is the battery telling you it is running out of punch.
2. Dimming lights while cranking. Watch the dashboard and the headlights as you turn the key. On a healthy battery they dim slightly. On a tired one they drop noticeably, sometimes almost going out, before recovering once the engine fires. The same goes for headlights that look yellow rather than white at idle in traffic and brighten when you rev.
3. Slow or lazy electrics. Electric windows that travel more slowly than they used to, a sunroof that hesitates, central locking that sounds weaker, a stereo that resets. These are all symptoms of a supply that cannot hold its voltage under load.
4. A battery or charging warning light. Usually a red or amber symbol shaped like a battery. It is worth being precise about this one, because it is widely misread: that light generally means the charging system is not delivering, which more often points at the alternator or its belt than at the battery itself. 5. Rapid clicking, no start. A fast machine gun clicking when you turn the key is the classic sound of a battery with enough charge to operate the starter solenoid but not enough to spin the engine. A single loud clunk with no cranking is a different sound and points more towards the starter motor.
6. It needs a jump start. Once is bad luck. Twice is a diagnosis.
7. Nothing at all. No lights, no click, no dashboard. The battery is completely flat, or a terminal connection has failed.
The physical signs that override everything
Some clues are visible rather than behavioural, and they trump how the car happens to be starting today. Open the bonnet and look at the battery.
A swollen or bulging case. If the sides are no longer flat, the battery has overheated or been overcharged and has distorted internally. Replace it, and have the charging system checked to find out why.
White, blue or green crust on the terminals. Corrosion around the posts adds resistance exactly where you can least afford it. Sometimes cleaning it is a genuine fix, but heavy corrosion often means the battery has been venting acid, which is a sign it is on the way out.
A rotten egg or sulphur smell. That is escaping hydrogen sulphide. A leaking or venting battery is finished, and it is also the one condition an MOT tester will record, since the inspection manual treats a battery that is insecure or leaking as a defect.
A visible leak or damp patch under the battery. Same answer. Do not try to nurse it along.

The third row is the one worth understanding. Once the engine is running, the car is supposed to be powered by the alternator. If the alternator has failed, the engine keeps running by draining whatever is left in the battery, and when that runs out the car stops, usually with the dashboard lighting up and the power steering going heavy. How long should a battery last?
The RAC puts a typical car battery at three to five years, and that matches what most garages see. It is a range rather than a number because usage matters at least as much as age.
Once yours passes three years, treat age itself as a warning sign. A battery does not fall off a cliff at a set date, but the probability of it letting you down starts climbing, and the cost of finding out the hard way is a recovery truck rather than a ten minute test. What shortens a battery life
Short journeys. The biggest factor by a distance, and the most counter intuitive. Starting the engine takes a large chunk of charge out of the battery, and the alternator needs a sustained run to put it back. A car used for a five minute trip to the shops and back never gets that run, so it loses a little more each time. A pattern of short journeys can take years off a battery.
Standing unused. A parked car still draws a small standing current for the alarm, the clock and various modules. Left for weeks, especially in cold weather, a battery can discharge far enough to damage itself permanently.
Repeatedly running it flat. Ordinary car batteries are not designed to be deeply discharged. Leaving the lights on overnight a few times will measurably shorten the life of a battery even after it is recharged.
Heat as well as cold. People associate battery failure with winter, but sustained high under bonnet temperatures accelerate the internal chemistry that wears a battery out. Summer often does the damage, and winter presents the bill.
Loose or corroded terminals. A poor connection makes the battery work harder and charge less effectively. It is also one of the few battery problems that is genuinely cheap to fix.
The wrong specification. Fitting a standard battery to a stop start car is a false economy that can wear the new battery out inside a year or two.
Why cold weather finishes off a weak battery
Cold does two unhelpful things at once. It slows the chemical reaction inside the battery, so the same battery can deliver less current at freezing point than it can on a mild day. And it thickens the engine oil, so the starter motor has to work harder to turn the engine over. The battery has less to give at exactly the moment more is being asked of it, on top of the lights, heater, heated screen and wipers all running from the moment you get in.

What a garage battery test actually measures
A proper test is quick, usually a few minutes, and it is worth knowing what it involves so you can tell a real test from a glance at a voltmeter.
Resting voltage. With everything off, a healthy fully charged 12 volt battery sits at roughly 12.6 to 12.8 volts. Around 12.4 is about three quarters charged, and 12.0 or below is effectively flat. This number alone proves very little, because a worn out battery can still show a good resting voltage.
Cranking voltage under load. This is the test that matters. The tester either loads the battery electronically or watches the voltage while the engine is actually cranked. A good battery holds up reasonably well under that load. A worn one collapses, and that collapse is what a resting voltage reading cannot see.
Cold cranking amps against the rating. Modern testers estimate the current the battery can actually deliver and compare it to the figure printed on the case. A battery delivering well below its rating is on borrowed time even if the car still starts today.
Charging voltage with the engine running. Typically somewhere around 13.7 to 14.7 volts. Too low means the alternator is not charging properly. Too high means it is overcharging, which cooks batteries. This is the step that catches an alternator fault before it strands you.
Standing current draw. If the complaint is a battery that keeps going flat overnight, a garage can measure how much current the car draws when it should be asleep, and then pull fuses one at a time to find the circuit responsible. This takes longer and is usually charged as diagnostic time, but it is the only way to find a parasitic drain. The reason to have this done rather than guess is simple economics. A battery test is quick and often free or nominal at a garage that expects to sell you a battery if you need one. Replacing a good battery because the real fault was the alternator costs you the battery and leaves you with the original problem.
What the MOT does and does not check
This surprises a lot of people. The MOT inspection manual covers the battery only for security and condition, so a battery that is loose in its carrier or visibly leaking is a recorded defect. There is no test of battery health, no charging system test, and no requirement that the engine starts easily or at all.
So a car can pass its MOT in the morning and refuse to start that afternoon, and nothing has gone wrong with the test. Can you keep jump starting it?
You can, and sometimes you have to, but treat it as a countdown rather than a solution.
Every jump start leaves the alternator with the job of recharging a deeply discharged battery, which is not what it was designed for. Doing that repeatedly puts real strain on the alternator, so a habit of jump starting can turn a battery bill into a battery and alternator bill. And there is the obvious point that a car needing regular jump starts will eventually fail to start somewhere with no one around to help.
If you do jump start, follow the correct sequence, connect the final earth lead to a bare metal point on the engine rather than directly to the flat battery negative terminal, and then drive for a decent run rather than switching straight off. What replacing it involves
On many older cars a battery swap is a ten minute job with a spanner. On a modern car it is often not, and this is worth knowing before you decide to do it yourself.
Cars with stop start systems, and a growing number without, need the new battery registered to the vehicle electronics with a diagnostic tool. The car keeps a model of the battery age and condition and adjusts its charging accordingly. Fit a new battery without telling it, and it will keep charging as though the battery were four years old, which shortens the life of the one you just paid for and can upset the stop start function.
There is also the specification. Stop start cars need an EFB or AGM type battery rather than a standard one, because the constant stopping and starting cycles them far harder. Fitting a cheaper standard battery to a stop start car is one of the more expensive false economies on a modern vehicle.

Electric and hybrid cars are a different question
Everything above is about the 12 volt battery, which almost every car on the road has, electric ones included. An electric car still uses a small 12 volt battery to run its lights, locks and computers, and it can go flat and strand the car exactly like any other, which catches a lot of owners out.

Book a battery and charging check if any of the following is true. The car has needed a jump start more than once. The battery is over three years old and starting has become noticeably slower. A battery or charging warning light has appeared. The case is swollen, the terminals are crusted, or there is a sulphur smell. Or the battery keeps going flat when the car stands for a few days.
Ask the garage to test the battery and the alternator together, and to give you the readings rather than just a verdict.
