How is servicing an electric car different?

What disappears from the service list

Start with the good news, because it is substantial. Every item below is a routine cost a petrol or diesel owner pays for and an electric owner never does.

  • Fuel pump, injectors and the clutch on a manual gearbox. An EV has a single speed transmission and no fuel system.

What an electric car service actually covers

What is left is not a token inspection. It is the safety and thermal side of the car, which is the half that was always doing the real work.

Brakes, and more carefully than on a petrol car. Covered properly in its own section below, because it is the one thing most owners get wrong.

Brake fluid. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and reduces braking performance when it gets hot. That chemistry does not care what drives the wheels, so brake fluid is still tested and renewed to the schedule in your handbook. Battery and motor coolant. Most electric cars circulate coolant around the high voltage battery and the drive unit to hold them in a safe temperature range. This is the system that protects the most expensive component in the car, so its level, condition and the state of its hoses are checked. It is one of the few EV items that can be more involved than its petrol equivalent rather than less.

Tyres. Tread depth, condition, pressures and wear pattern. EVs are hard on tyres for reasons covered further down, and this is usually the largest recurring running cost an EV owner has.

The 12 volt battery. The small conventional battery that wakes the car up, runs the computers and closes the contactors on the main pack. It is checked and load tested, and it is the most common reason an electric car will not start.

Cabin filter. Still gets dirty, still gets replaced, exactly as in any other car.

Software. A modern EV is largely defined by its software, and manufacturers push updates that change charging behaviour, efficiency, thermal management and driver assistance. Applying outstanding updates and clearing stored fault codes is now a normal part of a service visit rather than an extra. The brake problem nobody warns EV owners about

An electric car slows itself using the motor, turning the car’s momentum back into charge. What does servicing an electric car cost?

Servicing is not the MOT

They are separate things and one never replaces the other. An electric car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of registration and then every year, exactly like a petrol car. The test is shorter in one respect, because there is no tailpipe and so no exhaust emissions check, and identical in every other.
