That is coolant being burnt in the cylinders, and it usually means a failed head gasket, a cracked head or a warped block. Coolant is a poor lubricant and it does not compress, so running an engine that is pumping it into a cylinder risks bearing damage and a bent rod. Blue smoke: the engine is burning oil

When it appears is the useful clue:

  • Under hard acceleration. More often piston rings or bore wear, where combustion pressure pushes oil past.

  • A blocked air filter. Genuinely a service item, and often the whole answer. It is replaced as standard in a full service.
  • A faulty sensor, typically a mass air flow or oxygen sensor feeding the engine computer the wrong number, so it fuels to a picture that is not real.
  • A clogged EGR valve, common on higher mileage diesels, often with rough running and a loss of power.
  • Worn or leaking injectors, which deliver a poor spray pattern and dump raw fuel into the cylinder.

Grey smoke, and the awkward middle

Grey is the colour nobody can agree on, because it is usually one of the other three seen in poor light or thinned by wind. Judge it by smell and by when it happens rather than by shade. Sweet points to coolant, acrid and oily points to oil, and a strong fuel smell points to fuelling. If you cannot tell, film ten seconds of it on your phone from behind the car at idle and again as someone blips the throttle. A technician can usually read that video in seconds, and it costs you nothing.

  • Stop and do not drive on if white smoke is thick and constant with the engine hot, especially with a rising temperature gauge, a dropping coolant level, or sludge under the oil cap.
  • Stop if smoke arrives with a warning light for oil pressure or temperature, or with any knocking from the engine.
  • Drive gently and get it seen if blue smoke is new, if black smoke is heavy, or if the car has also lost power.

What the MOT says about smoke

Smoke is tested, and the rules are more specific than most drivers expect.
